Poco a Poco aces debut golf tournament at Chapala Country Club
Leaders at Poco a Poco San Pedro Itzicán report that their first-ever golf tournament fundraiser, held Thursday, January 29, at the
Tournament winners were Hector Briseño, Ignacio Valladares, Manuel Gonzáles and Isabel Garcáa in first place; Peter Wakeman, Jonathan Osman, Tom Laanep, and Elva Johnson in second; with Dan and Tracy Bowen, Anita and Doug Colbert coming in third.
In other contests for men and women, prizes went to Alfonso Hernandez and Tracey Bowen for the longest drive; Ignacio Valladares and Sue Campbell for closest to the line; Jamie Francisco Castello and Dianne Matteson for closest to the hole. Anita Colbert won the putting contest.
According to Kari Higgins, a co-founder of the Poco a Poco non-profit association, every aspect of the tournament ran smoothly: From the food and drinks provided on the course by Kinda Bazaar; the cookies made by Jan; the excellent buffet meal provided by the Club; desserts made by the Lakeside Cooking Club; together with the 50/50 ticket sales, silent auction, live auction, surprise and tournament winners prizes. She says everything seemed to make the players happy, raising expectations that they will return to compete again next year.

Appreciation also went to Selección de la Vid, Wijn Import for the baskets of Pere Ventura and Santa Alicia wines; Atlas Golf Club and the Chula Vista Country for tournament prizes. The event was also supported by Dermika, Paz Vinos y Licores, Vinos America, Cine Lago+, and S&S Auto, plus Golf Premio Goat Golf Cart for the Hole in One prize; Juan de Dios “Bebo” Garcia for the tents; Rosticería El Puente for the taquitos; and Tequila 30-30 for the tequila shots. Thanks also go out to the two generous Live Auction donors and other individuals who contributed, to MC Alice Wiltshire, who kept things on schedule, and to the volunteers who helped make it happen.
Proceeds from the tournament will be used to cover ongoing costs community social services that includes feeding 180 children five days per week, and related expenses such as collecting food supplies and purchasing bottled drinking water; supplying gasoline for the truck and propane gas for the kitchen; paying electricity bills to run two fridges and a freezer; and providing small stipends to the cooks and support personnel who keep records of daily attendance. Funds will also be used to pay for the delivery of some donated pantry goods and the organization of the Despensa program to feed needy families.
