Shriner ribfests give help and hope to disabled kids

Ángel Paúl Muñoz Martínez was diagnosed with spina bifida and fluid on the brain at birth. Doctors at Guadalajara’s Centro Médico told his parents he had a slim chance of surviving a devastating congenital condition. Today, the nine-year-old is a bright and lively youngster with a positive outlook on reaching adulthood despite being confined to a wheelchair. His history is why he was chosen as the poster boy for the 19th annual Lake Chapala Shrine Club Ribfest fundraiser.

Staff changes at Wilkes Center spark controversy

Leaders at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) have been scrambling to quell public controversy concerning recent staff changes at the Wilkes Education Center (WEC).

The dispute between LCS management and a group of volunteer teachers at WEC stemmed from the job reassignment of María Huerta, the center’s long-time de facto administrator.
