Gala fundraiser

Mariachi Juvenil Axixic, a youth ensemble made up of the most talented students from the Pedro Rey Mariachi School in Ajijic, is seeking $US12,000 to purchase a used Hyundai Starex truck.

pg17aThis will allow the students and their instruments to be safely transported to rehearsals and performances.

As a fundraiser for this and other local community projects, the Ajijic Rotary Club is holding a Gala Art Show and Auction, featuring Efren Gonzalez and friends, Sunday, March 22, at El Pilar Bistro, Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar.

The art exhibit will be on show from 2:30 p.m., and the auction begins at 4 p.m.

Entry tickets are 200 pesos and bidding paddles are 200 pesos. This includes the first glass of wine, beer or non-alcoholic beverage, botanas and valet parking. Entertainment is by the Black Sapphire Jazz Band.

• Efren Gonzalez holds an auction of oils, watercolors, acrylics, sculpture, and more on Friday, March 13, 3 p.m. on the north side of the Ajijic plaza.

• Art in the Garden: Enjoy a relaxed walk along the paths and gardens of Lake Chapala Society, where local artists and artisans share their work in a beautiful garden setting. Browse unique, handcrafted pieces, meet the creators, and soak in the creativity that makes our community special. Saturday, March 14, 10 a.m to 2 p.m. at Lake Chapala Society.

• The Artists of Lake Chapala hold their monthly Art Market at the Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera (CCAR) on Saturday, March 21, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free admission.

FRIDAY

• The acclaimed vocal ensemble Nova Lux performs “Un Tapiz de Clásicos Corales” — a program of choral masterpieces from the Renaissance to the present — at Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) on Friday, March 13, 4 p.m. Nova Lux is an elite 16-member subset of Las Voces del Lago. The program includes works by Antonio Scandello, William Byrd, Heinrich Schütz, Felix Mendelssohn and Morten Lauridsen, and will feature an early music recorder trio.

• The Romeos play 4to Sentido, 4:30 p.m. Cover: 130 pesos.

Exhibits

• “Presence, Shared Encounters from Mexico,” an exhibit featuring photographs by Xill Fessenden and sculptures by Moises Perez Solis (above), is adorning the entrance and dining areas of Casa del Sol Inn. Juarez 7, Ajijic.

• Forty-two graphic artists from Lakeside and Guadalajara unite for the second edition of Lagografias, the second edition of contemporary graphic arts showcasing many different styles, at the Centro Cultural Ajijic. The inauguration is on Saturday, March 21, 5 p.m. The exhibit will be up for three weeks.

• The Lake Chapala Fine Artists Guild group exhibition continues at the Centro Cultural Ajijic through Monday, March 16. Regular opening hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Admission is free.

• Amigrante Galeria, Marcos Castellanos 14B, is hosting an exhibit of collage paintings.

 

Auditions

The BRAVO! Theatre will hold open auditions for their October production, “Unwrap Your Candy” by Doug Wright. The show consists of four short comedic plays — including the story of a fetus talking to its mother, a creepy real estate showing, and a tale of a child prodigy.

The Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera holds a sale of musical items, cultural interchange, and an open mic event, Saturday, March 14, 2 to 5 p.m. Free entry.
