Fire on the mountain over Lake Chapala

Since the last days of April, firefighters from Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos, Chapala, Jocotepec, Tlajomulco de Zúñiga and Jalisco’s Civil Protection brigade have been battling an extensive brush and forest fire that has spread over both sides of the mountain range bordering Lake Chapala’s north shore.

Due to strong winds combined with extreme dry conditions of the land and foliage, more than 150 hectares of terrain within natural reserve area had become scorched mid-week and smoky air quality prevailed throughout the region.

Chapala's proposed animal protection law goes under review

The draft of Chapala’s groundbreaking regulatory code on animal rights and protection was put up for public review this week, giving citizens and representatives of animal shelters, rescue groups and animal care professionals an opportunity to weigh in on the content and suggest changes based on real-life experiences in this community.
