Trees knocked down in storms

While the town of Chapala and its immediate surroundings have seen little storm damage so far this rainy season, dozens of trees were knocked down during a fierce tempest that struck the town of Atotonilquillo and neighboring parts of Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos in the early hours of Friday, July 14.

What’s up with this summer’s weird climate?

While local weather watchers puzzle over the delay of this year’s rainy season, meteorologists attribute the atypical situation to El Niño, a naturally occurring climate pattern associated with warming of the ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.

Tree butchery sparks public outcry

The sudden removal of a row of trees boarding the highway across the road from Ajijic’s Plaza Bugambilias on Tuesday, July 11 generated a hail of criticism against the Chapala government, labeled as unwarranted ecocide.

Tree planting season arrives

If the prolongation of this year’s dry season has caused angst and discomfort amongst inhabitants of the Lake Chapala region, it has also given heightened impetus to Sembradores de Vida and other local environmental activists who lead and support community reforestation projects.
