Genealogy Forum

The Genealogy Forum will meet on Monday, April 27, 2 p.m. in the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Sala. This month’s session will include a webinar by Legacy Family Tree called “Hookers, Crooks and Kooks: Aunt Merle Didn’t Run a Boarding House.”

Many of us want to ignore that scalawag, that counterfeiter, or that madam of our family tree, but the black sheep may prove the most interesting of all. Learn to examine clues in unusual and also common sources. Learn how they lead to locating more records. The presenter is Jana Sloan Broglin, a professional genealogist with over 35 years experience.

Marci Bowman will also give a brief presentation on using Jing – a free screen clipping application by SnagIt.

Help for Animals

John Marshall from the Lakeside Friends of the Animals sent information worth clipping and saving, or at least copying into your address book. If you, or your friends notice a suffering animal – one that has been hit by a car or that has been injured by abuse, you can report it to the Chapala Ecology Station. The office is between Bancomer and the Beer Garden in the block leading to the Chapala malacon. The station’s telephone is (376) 765-8025, or you can email them at This email address is being protected from spambots. Open House

The local Royal Canadian Legion is sponsoring an open house at the Jocotepec shelter for the elderly, Corazon del Anciano, on Saturday, March 14, from noon until 4 p.m. The building recently had major settling problems which caused a lot of damage, including cracks in the walls. Parts of the shelter, including the dining room and shower areas, cannot currently be used.

While the elderly and the homeless miss their weekly Saturday lunches and access to the warm showers, they are continuing with dance, exercise and craft classes.

The open house will allow area residents to visit the facility and see the extent of the work that needs to be done before the home can again offer full services to the poor of the area.
