City’s lavish new arts complex sets February 9 opening

A concert featuring famed operatic tenor Javier Camarena with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra will headline the opening of Guadalajara’s newest performing arts space, the Palacio de la Cultura y la Comunicación (Palcco) on Tuesday, February 9. Tickets are priced from 600 to 1,500 pesos.


Folk dance Sundays at Teatro Alarife

Aficionados of traditional folk dance will have multiple opportunities to enjoy a broad selection of colorful and emotional dances performed by the  Ballet México Folklórico, directed by Paul Alba, each Sunday in January and February.

The season of New York Met live simulcasts starts the new year with “The Pearl Fishers,” Bizet’s opera of lust and longing set in the Far East. The opera returns to the Met stage for the first time in 100 years.  Soprano Diana Damrau stars as Leïla, the beautiful Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her hand. Her suitors are tenor Matthew Polenzani and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, who sing the lilting duet “Au fond du temple saint.”

City’s month-long organ festival

Those who get a kick out of sitting in churches and listening to the vibrant sound of organ music have a treat in store over the coming month.  In a bid to try and promote the love of this genre, the Domingo Lobato Association has organized a festival at various Guadalajara churches, featuring some of Mexico’s most accomplished organists.
