Acclaimed Guadalajara ballet dancer Isaac Hernandez (right) has become the first Mexican exemplar of that most kinesthetic of arts to grace a major Italian stage – and under the leadership of superstar Mikhail Baryshnikov, no less.
Newcomers to the region should not be awed by the Feria Internacional del Libro (FIL), Guadalajara’s annual book fair.
To the untrained eye, Marcelo Tobar’s film “Oso Polar” (Polar Bear), which picked up the Best Mexican Feature award at the recent Morelia Film Festival, looks to all intents and purposes like any other movie made in this country on a limited budget.
“Coco,” a movie produced and helmed by U.S. filmmakers about Dia de los Muertos, has shattered box office records in Mexico, where it is now the top-grossing movie of all time with a present take of $US43 million, a number sure to keep climbing during the remainder of its theatrical run.
For once, language doesn’t matter, in a weeklong international festival of sophisticated circus acts to be presented in Guadalajara Saturday, November 18 through Sunday, November 26 under the banner of FiCHo, the Festival Internacional de Circo y Chou (International Festival of Circus and Show).

The only full-time professional troupe in the state presents the one-act ballet Scheherezade, based on “One Thousand and One Nights,” with music by Rimsky-Korsakov.
